WSFC Newsletter - June 2014

Hello Ladies,
Welcome summer.  I hope you have all had a chance to get out on the beach and target the spring run.  Right now, we are getting quite a variety off the beaches.  This past weekend I heard reports of Blues, Bass, Black Drum, Flounder and Kingfish.  Don’t wait until the beaches are crowded with summer visitors, to get your lines wet.

Our 2013 Awards Banquet in April was another huge success.  Once again, Arlene and Andrea put together a nice event at the Brigantine Links.  The entertainment was truly one of kind and the highlight of the evening.

Arlene Perkowski - 1st Place in Most Fish, Largest Flounder, Largest Bluefish, and Largest Kingfish
Doreen Szcsepanski - 1st Place Largest Striper, and 3rd Place Largest Flounder
Lisa Gibbons – 1st Place Largest Black Drum
Andrea Tamburino - 2nd Place in Most Fish, Largest Flounder and Largest Kingfish
Sharon Otto - 2nd Place Largest Striper
Jennifer Arellano - 2nd Place Largest Bluefish
Susan Boehret - 3rd Place Largest Kingfish
Jane Jefferys - 3rd Place Most Fish
Reggi Vasta - 3rd Place Largest Bluefish
Margaret Crossley - 3rd Place Largest Striper
Good job Ladies!

This year’s Woman of the Year Award was a tie between two deserving women, Margaret Marie Crossly and Chris Pancoast.

Tournaments for the spring have come and gone.  We fished 3 tournaments this spring.  It was a tough start to the season as the colder winter kept the fish from moving early.  The WSFC A team took 5th and 6th place in two of the spring tournaments which puts them in a tie for 3rd place in the ASAC ranks.

A very important reminder, our tournament this year is on Saturday, Sept 20th in Brigantine.

This is a very special tournament this year.  It will be our 30th tournament.  Let’s make it an anniversary tournament celebration.  Please start working on obtaining door prizes.  You can start NOW by going to your local shops and merchants for donations.  Anyone needing a donation letter please reach out to Andrea and she will send them to you.

WSFC sends deepest condolences to our members and friends who lost a loved one recently.

ASAC’s former Vice President for 11 years and WSFC supporter, Dick Halasek, passed away after a long illness on May 13th.

I would like to have a cast-net throwing seminar sometime this summer when the baitfish start moving in.  Live wells in the fall seem to have some advantage for the later tournaments.  Any ideas?  Let’s see what we can do about getting ourselves hooked up.

When we deicide on a date for the seminar, bring your nets with you.  I also have extras that you can use.
Ladies, enjoy your summer fishing and don’t forget to fill out your affidavits for your catches.

They can be hand written and mailed to Margaret Crossley OR filled out on line and sent electronically.

Women's Surf Fishing Club of New Jersey, Inc

The Women's Surf Fishing Club of NJ, Inc. was organized in 1952. It was the first surf-fishing club established for women on the East Coast. The purpose of WSFC is to promote the sport of surf fishing, endorse marine conservation and inspire camaraderie among women as well as encourage participation in events that benefit women’s causes.

The club’s members are comprised of women of all ages, backgrounds, and professions. We embrace the novice angler and learn from the experienced angler. The social aspect of the club opens doors to new experiences and friendships.

The WSFC elects its officers at our annual Christmas luncheon held each year in December. Currently, Chris Pancoast is our President, Margaret Crossley, Vice-President, Andrea Tamburino, Secretary, and Arlene Perkowski, Treasurer.

The WSFC also has several committees headed by appointed chairs. The committees are Membership, Tournament, Affidavit, Marketing/PR, and Banquet. You’ll meet the current chairs of these committees throughout the website.

To join WSFC a Membership Application is filled out and submitted for approval. Once the applicant is approved, she pays dues of $25.00 by sending a check to the membership chair whose name and address is on the application.

To remain a member in good standing with WSFC, dues must be paid each year by December 31st for the following year and members must comply to our Constitution and By-Laws. Our year runs from January 1st to December 31st. We fish between 9 and 11 ASAC sanctioned Tournaments a year, hosted by other teams. The WSFC sponsors any club members who fish on our team(s). We also have a tournament program which is an intra-club competition.

Club awards and trophies are given at the Annual Awards Banquet in April. To qualify for club awards, members must have their dues up to date, attend at least two (2) club functions a year and CATCH FISH of course! Please see Tournament Program and www.asaconline.org for more information.

WSFC hosts our own ASAC sanctioned tournament each year in October. All members are urged to help out. This tournament is how we make our money for the year’s tournament fees, bait, awards, and other expenses.

The WSFC promotes “catch and release”….Therefore it is not necessary to kill your fish to be measured. NJ State laws on size and bag limits apply to all registered fish.

Schedules for the ASAC sponsored tournaments can be obtained from www.asaconline.org.
